WineWise

When I started elloinos two years ago, my initial focus for exports was on the German and UK markets. Being located in Europe, this seemed to make intuitive sense. Of course I was aware of the importance of the US market in regards to wine, but as someone who had no formal background in the wine industry, this market seemed daunting to break into.

At the same time, one of the most exciting thrills for me has been to react to any developments that take place. I have received some serious interest from the US over the last 12 months, and I am delighted to officially announce a co-operation with WineWise, a well respected American wine importer from the west coast. We have been working together “under the radar screen” for some months in order to build up a solid portfolio of Greek wines for the Californian market. WineWise have offered Greek wines in the past, but have never directly imported them before.

The first shipment of wines has now arrived and is being distributed “as we speak”. There are two offerings from the Tetramythos winery (Aegialia, Peloponnese), a Roditis and an Agiorgitiko, which are both rock solid entry level value wines. In addition, I am thrilled that two wines from the Domaine Karanika in Amyndeo, Florina (Macedonia) are also included in this first shipment. A cool climate style Assyrtiko and a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon/Xinomavro blend are bound to make an impression. This is the first time that Domaine Karanika exports some of their wines to the US.

WineWise will increase the offering soon, samples are currently being evaluated and another shipment is planned for autumn. I am very much indebted to Hiram Simon and Brian Greenwood who have been extremely professional throughout and have stood their ground despite some inevitable teething problems (after all there are a number of issues involved when a German ships Greek wines to the US ;)

I am truly delighted that more quality Greek wines find their way to American importers who are serious about their business and believe in the opportunities ahead. Watch this space.
